Vintage for sure, very likely an Antique No makers’ marks Age unknown. Belonged to my parents, probably was my grandmother’s (b. 1899; d. 1980) before that. Excellent condition, no dings or dents Solid Brass? Solid Bronze? Is it Middle Eastern? Made in India? China? Based on motif (Lotus & Deer & Cranes & Bats- !!!) and the appearance of a Chinese character ( 日 , which means “sun; day”), I am pretty sure item is Chinese. Design Handmade. Etched / Engraved Deer and Birds (pretty sure they are cranes) Heavy! Each jar weighs about 2 pounds, 12 ounces (without lid!) Each lid weighs about 1 pound Together, each jar plus lid weigh 3.75 pounds (You do the math!) Dimensions (in inches): Jar 4-1/2” H by 3-7/8” W Jar plus lid: 6-5/8” H by 4” Capacity: 2 cups In Chinese mythology: A crane that is shown with its wings stretched out and one leg raised stands for longevity. When it is shown under a pine tree near a spotted deer, it symbolizes a prolonged life. Chinese artists have long used five bats to represent the five blessings: health, long life, prosperity, love of virtue, and a tranquil, natural death.
